Schools Re-open: A Call for Government Intervention and Community Support Amid Economic Challenges”

January is a very exuberant moment when we usher a new year, full of possibilities and fresh opportunities to be achieved.

However, as last year’s KCPE candidates are awaiting admission to various high schools, parents are facing a major setback owing to the tough economic times.

Most of the essential items required by students reporting to school are very expensive, with the prices of commodities shooting up, meaning parents have to dig deeper into their pockets to be able to finance their children’s stay in school.

Education sector is a very vital part of our nation, and therefore requires much attention from the government.

The government, therefore, should allocate more funds to schools, so as to reduce the burden on parents. The government must also ensure that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is disbursed to cater for the needy students in respective constituencies.

Ensuring that the money is spent wisely, without corrupt individuals pondering on the money mercilessly, should be key.

Schools, on the other hand, should admit all students who received a calling letter to the respective schools, even those who lack school fees. And give them an opportunity to pay later.

The Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Ezekiel Machogu with assistance from local authorities, the chiefs and village elders should comb all areas to ensure that the 100% transition agenda is a success.

The law enforcers should also deal with those parents who will subject their children to child labour instead of taking them to school.

It is the parents’ role to provide and cater for the needs of the family. And should also make a deliberate and determined effort to ensure that their children are in school.

School-heads who will turn away students from financially struggling families should also be apprehended and face the wrath of the law.

Education is the backbone of a nation, and as such, Kenya should not only work to eliminate poverty, but also work to kick out illiteracy and therefore the government must ensure education is not only available but also affordable to all children in the country.

The Cabinet secretary interior, must ensure that the state of security in the northern part of Kenya and the North Rift region are in place. Every child has a right to education, and creating a conducive learning environment is necessary for making that right possible to all.

As schools reopen, it takes the effort of the whole community to ensure that all children are back in class and learning. From parents to village elders, chiefs to police, and the government at large.

Lets educate our children for a better nation, as a better nation equals a better future.
